What Is a Cmdlet?


Lightweight command that is used in the Windows PowerShell environment
Each cmdletperforms a specific, typically small, task
Windows PowerShell version 1.0 has over 130 built-in cmdlets
Get-Command –CommandTypecmdlet

Cmdlets are not stand-alone executables
Cmdlets are instances of .NET Framework classes
Cmdlets can be created from as few as a dozen lines of  code.
Windows PowerShell uses a verb-noun pair for the names of cmdlets
The verb part of the name identifies the action that the cmdlet performs.
The noun part of the name identifies the entity on which the action is performed
